IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

John Thomas Bruce, better known as Jack, died February 14, 2022. The eldest son of John “Jack” Bruce, Jr. and Jean Canoles Bruce, he grew up in Norfolk surrounded by a large extended family. Hours spent on the Lafayette River at his grandparent’s home brought him profound peace and joy he never forgot. After graduation from the College of William and Mary in 1973, Jack continued to the University of Richmond for his law degree. He began his law career as a clerk at the Supreme Court of Virginia before briefly joining the Norfolk law firm of Hofheimer, Nusbaum, McPhaul as an associate attorney. He returned to Richmond to accept the position of Chief Staff Attorney to the Supreme Court of Virginia. At the Court he wrote and supervised law clerks in reviewing petitions for appeals. He had begun a career of purpose and excellence that lasted 35 years until he was disabled by a stroke. He would often speak of the intellect and character that surrounded him in his workplace. He valued the hard work and support of his colleagues notably Susie Greenstreet. A man of integrity, kindness, sharp wit, faith, and unfailing gratitude Jack adored his grandparents, Leroy and Vera Canoles, his parents, the Constitution, his Camero, Eric Clapton music, hippos and the color purple probably in that order. He was one of kind. Jack was predeceased by his father and his daughter, Sarah Calvert Bruce. He is survived by adult children, Meredith Pirie Irvine and Alexander Canoles Bruce and their families. He is also survived by his mother and his sister, Linda Bruce Palmer and brother-in-law, Noah, as well as niece Elizabeth Palmer(Blake Carrell), and nephews Noah Palmer (Lisa) and Jack Palmer (Rachel). The family wishes to thank Brookdale Chambrel for helping Jack these last years maintain his independence. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, please offer a donation to your favorite charity. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at the Christopher Wren Chapel on the campus of William and Mary at 2 pm Saturday, February 19, 2022. Pastor Doug Bunn of Eastside Church will preside. Masks are appreciated. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.NelsenWilliamsburg.com for the Bruce family.
