Obituary of Nellie Lee Carter
Nellie Lee Carter, 99, of Afton Mountain, passed away on Tuesday June 26, 2012 at her residence. Born March 25, 1913 in Augusta County, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Bessie (Thompson) Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, George, Richard, Floyd, Fred and Charles Carter; sister, Blanche Zimmerman. Ms. Carter was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Ms. Carter was a member of First Baptist Church, Waynesboro, where she was a part of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. She worked as a bookkeeper for Augusta Cleaners for many years until her retirement. Nellie belonged to several organizations past and present including the Waynesboro Chapter 105 Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She enjoyed sewing and meeting people. Nellie is survived by “her kids”, Freda (Pete) Wood, Wanda (Larry) Gordon, Thomas (Myra) Carter, Doris (Mark) Rapert; as well as many other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday June 29, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Waynesboro with Rev. David Washburn officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 pm at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main Street and other times at the residence of Thomas Carter, 1259 Meadowbrook Road, Waynesboro, VA 22980. Active pallbearers will be Thomas Carter, Mark Rapert, Larry Gordon, Pete Wood, Bud Carter, and Ron Gibson. Those wishing to donate may make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church, 301 S. Wayne Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980. The family would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Ben Farley and Hospice of the Shenandoah for their care of Ms. Carter during her illness; as well as special caregiver and friend, Ron Gibson.
