Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes & Crematory
John David Bolton, known to many as J.D., age 90 years old of Staunton, Virginia died peacefully on January, 28th, 2023 in Midlothian, Virginia. Born on January 30th, 1932 in Staunton, VA., son of the late James Morgan Bolton and Virginia Stuart Bolton.
J.D. was the youngest of 4 children. He was raised in the Presbyterian church. He attended school in Staunton and college at Virginia Tech where he studied forestry and civil engineering. J.D. was a proud Hokie. He also served in the U.S. Army for 2 years. One of his first jobs was as a surveyor and he travelled the east coast working on many bridges and roadways. For the majority of his life, he worked as a Cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency with the Department of Defense in D.C. for over 28 years. He met the love of his life, Dottie after his retirement. J.D. always enjoyed playing golf, fishing, camping, going to Washington Capital hockey games, and travelling the country with Dottie. He loved and cherished his 2 children. He loved animals and was a beautiful, gentle soul. He was the definition of a gentleman; he was strong, kind, respectful, never offensive and very friendly. In his retirement he enjoyed serving others at the Verona Community Food Pantry. He and his wife served there for many years.
Although J.D. lived in many places in his life, Staunton has always held the most special place in his heart. Whenever he was away from Staunton, he longed to return. The fondest memories in his life are of Staunton.
J.D. is preceded in death by his brother Jim, sister-in-law Lorraine and his sister Kitsy and brother-in-law Bob.
J.D. is survived by his wife Dottie, his son John and wife Ronda, his daughter Ginny and husband Dany, his grandchildren Noah, Isabelle and Michael and his brother Milton (Bo) and wife Barbara.
We are grateful for all the kindness and love shown to our Dad from Dottie’s children; Doug, Scott, Dawn and Mike.
The family also wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Linda Biers, RN of Home Instead for her steadfast dedication and care of J.D. in the months preceding his death.
