Captain Robert Joseph Lewis USN (RET) of Springfield, Virginia joined our Lord and Savior on June 6, 2012 after a short battle with Liver and Kidney disease. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. Bob was born to the late Joseph and Sophia Lewis in Scranton, Pennsylvania on September 21, 1937. He excelled in school and graduated from Scranton Technical School in 1955. Upon graduation Robert enlisted into the United States Navy. After completion of an electronics course at Great Lakes Illinois he was assigned to the submarine service. After serving aboard the USS Tench he was accepted to the United States Naval Academy after winning a fleet wide competitive entrance exam. While at the Academy Bob participated in football, soccer and cross country. He also served as 5th Company Commander. Robert was commissioned into the United States Navy in 1962. After his commissioning, Robert served on the staff of the United States Naval Academy, received nuclear power training at Bainbridge, Maryland and attended the United States Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut. Robert served aboard several submarines to include the USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Sturgeon, USS Tunny and the USS Lewis and Clark where he served as Executive Officer. In 1978 Bob became the Commanding Officer of the USS Woodrow Wilson. While on the Woodrow Wilson,he was selected to the rank of Captain. After a few years of serving at the Pentagon, Captain Lewis retired in 1985. He is proceeded in death by his wife Geles Leantine Lewis and is survived by his brother David Lewis,his sister Arlene Genovese, his daughter Remy Morrow and her husband Steve Morrow, his daughter Elizabeth Fee and her husband Ryan Fee, his son Kenneth Lewis, his grandsons Tyler Lewis and Michael Morrow, his granddaughters Devon Lewis and Brianne Morrow, and his fiancée Virginia Thacker. A graveside service will be held on September 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Arlington National Cemetery. A reception will follow at Ft. Meyer Officers Club.
