Clara Louise Mills Glass, “Miss Lou,” passed away on October 26, 2021 at the age of 101 in Springfield, VA. Mrs. Glass was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Carper Glass; parents, George Lewis Mills and Clara May Anderson Mills; three brothers, Ralph Mills, Lewis Mills and Thomas Mills. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Glass Little; son and daughter-in-law, David and Jan Glass; grandchildren, Christopher Little and wife, Meghan Little; Katherine Little Kivisto and husband, Aaron Kivisto; Andrew Glass and Philip Glass; great grandchildren, Brayden Little, Avery Little, Maxwell Kivisto and Kai Kivisto and some nieces and nephews. Louise was born December 19, 1919 in Roanoke, VA to George and Clara Mills. She attended high school in Roanoke and then went on to National Business College for two years. She was an athlete who did gymnastics as a youth, later playing basketball, tennis and golf. She won the city tennis finals in her early 20’s in Roanoke, VA and met her future husband, Andrew Glass, when he saw her photo in the city newspaper and decided to ask her out on a date. They were married on June 26, 1943. They enjoyed 54 wonderful years together until his death in 1994. Mrs. Glass worked as a secretary at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church for several years. Then she worked as a secretary for the Headquarters, Air Force Reserve Office at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. where she had the opportunity to meet NASA astronaut Michael Collins. Louise was an avid reader, who also excelled as a visual artist, and hand crafter of ceramics and beautiful crocheted and knitted items. She enjoyed games such as bridge and checkers. She loved music particularly hymns and big band songs. In retirement, Miss Lou loved being at her home on the Chickahominy River, surrounded by friends and her beloved chihuahua, Chu Chu. She also spent time boating, water skiing, sailing and entertaining her family. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church (1960’s & 70’s) and the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church later in life. Funeral services will be held at Demaine Funeral Home; 5308 Backlick Road; Springfield, VA 22151 on Thursday, November 11th. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. followed by a reception. Graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Roanoke, VA on Friday, November 12th. Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association.
