BILLIE LOREE STANTON Passed away on December 20, 2013 at the age of 92, with her husband and children at her side, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA. She was born on August 1, 1921 in Fort Worth, TX, raised in San Antonio, TX, and graduated with a B.A. from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1939. A veteran of WWII, she served in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps from 1942 to 1943, and the Women’s Air Corp from 1943 to 1946, in posts across the country and in occupied Berlin, Germany, attaining the rank of Captain. She was decorated with the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. She then served as a Captain in the Air Force Reserve from 1948 to 1956. In 1956 she began a successful career in the Department of Defense at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, ending with her retirement in 1981 as a Senior Finance Program Manager with the U.S. Navy in Arlington, VA., during which time she received numerous awards recognizing outstanding contributions and performance. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lloyd Winter Stanton, Jr., of Annandale, VA, and their son Robert Lloyd Stanton of Brooklyn, New York; her two children by her former husband, the late John Rowland Ward, Linda Loree Hammon and her husband Clifford Hammon of New Braunfels, TX, and Brian McCormick Ward and his spouse Sepideh Habibi of Vienna, VA; her grandchildren, Jeff Hammon of McKinney, TX, Kenneth Hammon of Chicago, IL, Beth Hammon of Spring Branch, TX, Justin Ward of Vienna, VA; and great-grandchildren Collier and Keaton Hammon of McKinney, TX, and Tobin LaCour of Spring Branch, TX. A private viewing for the family will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, December 26 at Demaine Funeral Home on Backlick Road in Springfield, VA, and a service for the family will be held at 2:00PM at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, VA. Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Stanton’s name to INOVA Fairfax Hospital.
