OBITUARY
Michael Patrick Phelan
January 19, 1948 – March 31, 2019
Michael Phelan, 71, passed away on March 31, 2019 in North Chesterfield, VA after a twelve- year struggle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends in his final days.
Mr. Phelan was born on January 19, 1948 in Chicago, IL to Jack and Betty (Althoff) Phelan and was raised in McHenry, IL. He graduated from McHenry High School in 1966. In 1972, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi fraternity. Following in his father’s footsteps, he entered the heating and air conditioning business, first working for Lennox Industries and General Electric before spending the majority of his career with Trane/Ingersoll Rand. His career led him to live in Omaha, NE; Kansas City, MO; Tyler, TX; Jacksonville, FL; and finally North Chesterfield, VA in 1982. He married Patty Phelan in Glen Ellyn, IL in 1974 and they had two children, Danny and Amanda.
Mr. Phelan possessed a remarkable mechanical ability and was always immersed in various projects. He was a member of Stonehenge Golf & Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. A passionate fisherman, he spent years fishing the tidewater and Atlantic waters. He was known for his excellent storytelling abilities, quick wit, keen sense of humor, and ability/desire to solve almost any problem. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Betty. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patty, his children, Danny and Amanda, and his sisters, Kitty Zriny and Jackie Jesse.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 12, at the Catholic Church of the Epiphany 11000 Smoketree Dr., N. Chesterfield. Visitation with family will be at 11 am and funeral Mass at 12 pm. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Operation Smile.
