John Louis Sullivan

John Louis Sullivan, 98 years old, of Sandston, VA passed away on January 9, 2024. He was born on November 12, 1925, in Varina, VA. He was married to Lois Harris Sullivan for 66 years. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois Sullivan; his mother, Naomi Adams Allen; and his brother, Frank M. Sullivan, Jr. He is survived by three sons, David (Marilyn), Douglas (Marcia), Daniel (Vicky); six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. John retired from the Virginia ABC Board with 41 years of service. He was a Special Agent in Charge. He served in the U.S. Navy as GM-2C in World War II for four years on the U.S.S. Coates Destroyer Escort 685 and he received the American Area Campaign medal, the World War II Victory medal and the Good Conduct medal for his service. He was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailor’s Association, American Legion Post 144 and a life member of VFW Post 9808. He also attended Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU). John was one of the founders of Sandston Little League Baseball in the 1950’s. Many of his friends today remember playing on the teams he coached. He was also involved with the development of the Sandston Pee Wee football league. John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his three sons and grandson, Andy. He also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Brookwoods Golf Club where he worked as a Marshall for over 20 years. He leaves behind many good friends and memories there. He also enjoyed his daily walks whether it be in the neighborhood, at Dorey Park or the mall. John never met a stranger; he was everyone’s friend. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23231, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the service starting at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Washington Memorial Park.
