IN THE CARE OF
Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory
SHANES, John B., 78, of Mechanicsville, departed this life after a brief illness on September 11, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lee Stillman Shanes; two children, son, Gregory Cole Shanes (Suzy); and daughter, Tracey Shanes Volkay (Brian); and four grandchildren, Bryce and Mitchell Volkay and Caitlyn and Hunter Shanes; in addition to four beloved furbabies. John enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve immediately out of high school and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was very proud to serve his country for those eight years and often spoke of the lessons he took from that experience. John’s dry wit was not apparent to everyone, but those who knew him well enjoyed his insightful commentaries. He was the former Richmond Branch Manager for Robertshaw Controls and co-owner of the Computer Concepts retail computer stores. His sharp eye for finance led him to seek a degree in accounting, and he became a CPA, a career he found very satisfying. He retired in 2015. John was a lifelong animal lover and volunteered at various times for the Richmond SPCA, Hanover Humane Society and Richmond Animal Care and Control. Family will receive friends on Sunday, September 16, at a memorial service to be held from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Nelsen Funeral Home Reception Center, 4660 S. Laburnum Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, Utah 84741 or online at bestfriends.org.
