Obituary of Jon Lewis Wakeman Swan
Jon Lewis Wakeman Swan, 77, of Richmond, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Swan and Dorothy Andrews Swan and sister, Michelle Swan Martin. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Swan; daughter, Jonna Briana Thoma (JR); and son, Jon Lewis Wakeman Swan, II (Shelley); brother, Gary H. Swan; brother-in-law, Frank Martin; nieces and nephews, Angela McDonnell (Matt), Gabriel Swan; and grand-daughters, Riley & Katelyn Thoma and Evelyn and Charlotte Swan. Born in Langley Virginia at Langley Air Force Base on December 26, 1944 to John and Dorothy Swan. Jon was an Air Force brat and lived in 46 countries and states by the time he was 16. When the family finally settled in Richmond, Jon graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in 1965. Jon was in the Army Reserves and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and went on to be a jack-of-all-trades. He was definitely an entrepreneur, wearing many hats throughout his career from being in the fish business, paint business, life insurance agent, benefits administrator, propane seller and window installer. He enjoyed working for himself. He and Barbara were married August 26, 1972 and enjoyed horses, cruising, Hallmark Christmas movies, waffles and spending time with family. This past August, Jon and Barbara celebrated 50 years of marriage with their family at Sandbridge Beach. As Pop-Pop, he enjoyed being able to be a grandpa and giving his grand-daughters whatever they wanted. Oreos, YES, cheese balls, YES, there was nothing they could ask for that he wouldn’t say YES to. The family will receive friends from 12 – 1 PM on Monday, December 12 at Woody’s Funeral Home prior to the funeral service at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Caribbean Lifetime Missions a mission their dear friend Isaac Egbewole has led for over 30 years. https://www.lifetimemissions.org/donate
