Dorothy Jean Raikes Wood

Dorothy Jean Raikes Wood, 90, of Madison Heights, passed away at Runk and Pratt in Forest in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 20th. Jean was born on January 7th, 1931 in Madison Heights and was the daughter of Charlie and Mary Alice Raikes. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and working in her yard. She was a member of Blue Ridge Christian Church. In addition to her parents and 12 siblings, she is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 61 years, Maynard Wood. Family was everything to her. She stayed at home to raise her two children, watched her two grandchildren from infancy, and took great delight in the chaos of her great grandchildren. She truly knew how to be goofy and have fun. At the same time, every person, especially children, left her presence feeling special and heard. She also had a great faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a great witness of His love and compassion to her generation and the generations underneath her. Jean is survived by her daughter, Shelby Wood Walthall and husband Steve of Madison Heights; her son, Larry Wood of the Netherlands; grandchildren, Crystal Fulmer and husband Ryan of Cross Lanes, WV and Adam Walthall and wife Sarah of Glen Allen; and great grandchildren, Cohen, Ella, Hannah, Elijah, Ezra, and Caris. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Ryan Fulmer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 10 am. Interment will be private for family only at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
