Obituary of Carroll "Skipper" Julian Burgess Jr.
Carroll Julian Burgess, Jr., 81, of Elon passed away Monday, July 15, 2024 with loved ones by his side. Skipper was born on a snowy December 23rd, 1942 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was the son of the late Doris Lee and Carroll Burgess, Sr. Skipper was an avid outdoorsman. He spent countless hours chopping wood at the woodpile. He also enjoyed hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The time he spent in the woods, along with the care Skipper dedicated to his garden, were testaments to his deep appreciation for nature. Skipper also cherished his family and will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents, Skipper was preceded in death by his infant brother, F. Eugene Burgess; his daughter, Kristin Burgess; and his sister-in-law Joyce Burgess. Those left to cherish Skipper’s memory include his loving wife of 55 years, Susan; his children, Paul and his wife, Carolyn, of Madison Heights; Matthew and his wife, Beth, of Mountain Home, Idaho; his grandchildren, Jacob, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Raylan and Doka Sue of Mountain Home, Idaho; his siblings, Martha Camden and her husband, Wade, of Elon, Joel Burgess of Lynchburg, Robert Burgess and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Lynchburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 6-8pm at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with a graveside service on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 11am at the Burgess Family Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Cody Bingham.
