Obituary of Martha Aileene Harrison
Martha Aileene Martin Harrison, 83, of Lynchburg, went home to be with the Lord after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the wife of her long, devoted husband, John G. Harrison. She was born January 26, 1928, in Vivian, WV, to the late Louie J. Martin and Blake Shank Martin. Aileene spent her early years in the Blue Ridge, Salem, Ironto and Roanoke areas. She graduated at Shawsville High School, class of 1944. After graduation, she went to work for Western Union and was instrumental in getting word to families regarding the death of their loved ones in World War II. Aileene also worked at Kroger Stores in Roanoke, Auto Spring and Bearing for nine years and at Roanoke Ready Mix Concrete Co. for eleven years. In 1973, she moved to Madison Heights with her husband Jay and son Mike. She worked at Barker Jennings from 1973 to 1982 and Griffin Pipe from 1982 to 1984. On October 2, 1954 Aileene and John G. Harrison were married at First United Methodist Church in Salem, VA and enjoyed 56 years together. Aileene and Jay were members of Red Hill Baptist Church in Roanoke County and after moving to Madison Heights they were members of West View Baptist Church in Madison Heights. In the past thirty-five years, they were members of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. Aileene is preceded in death by three brothers, Louie J. Martin, Jr., Rudolph Kelly Martin and Billie Gene Martin. In addition to her husband, Aileene is survived by one son, Michael G. Harrison and his wife Martha of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Gregory W. Harrison and his wife Lacy of Concord, Paula H. Watts and her husband Brian of Madison Heights, and C.J. Harrison and Monica Harrison of Lynchburg; and two great-grandchildren, Evan Harrison of Concord and Logan Watts of Madison Heights and many other family members and friends. A funeral service will be conducted, 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. James Newman and the Rev. Mack Almond, Jr. officiating. Interment will take place, 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Franklin Memorial Park in Franklin County, VA. The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2011, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence.
