Obituary of Shirley Lee Fink
Shirley Lee Fink, 86, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, December 3, 2022. She was born in Rogersville, TN on July 13, 1936. Shirley has lived in Kokomo most of her life, but she never forgot her southern roots. She was from a large family, having two brothers and six sisters. Shirley was a resident of The Legacy at Waterford Place, Kokomo, IN, at the time of her death. Shirley came to live in Kokomo with her then husband, Garney Rex Fink (John), who was her childhood sweetheart. Around 1956, together they brought their infant daughter, Debra Denise Simon (Debbie), north as the automotive industry offered good employment. Shirley retired from General Motors after working there for over 30 years and John worked in skilled trades at Chrysler for many years. Daughter Debbie would be their only child until a son, John Jason Fink, was born in l971. Jason had two sons, Zachary Ryan Fink and Trevor Scott Fink, and Debbie had one son, Drew Aaron Simon. Shirley loved her three grandsons dearly and they added great joy and pride to her life. She also had three great-grandchildren, Georgia Simon, Brielle Fink, and Braylon Fink. There was a constant in Shirley’s life that saw her through good times and bad. That constant was her love for her personal Savior, Jesus Christ. She raised both Jason and Debbie to also know the Lord, and as a testament to this, today both Jason and Debbie are Christians. Shirley attended Morningstar Church in Kokomo for many years. She cultivated many Christian friends there and she took pride in the works of love she did at Morningstar. She was involved in caring for young children and she loved the little children as Christ did. She also taught Sunday School for a time. For many years Shirley also helped make Morningstar’s wonderful chicken noodles that were sold at the fair each summer. The endeavor that meant the most to her, however, was her role as a leader in Divorce Care. This was Morningstar’s outreach to all divorced men and women. The program helped individuals turn the pain of broken marriages and broken homes into a reliance on God to right their lives. Having gone through divorce herself, Shirley gave her heart and soul to this outreach. Shirley suffered with Alzheimer’s Disease for several years, but even at the Legacy she kept the staff entertained. She was still “spunky”. Even with Alzheimer’s, Shirley was still in care-giver mode, always making sure to speak to, or just pat on the shoulder, anyone that she saw sitting alone or if she thought they were having a bad day. Shirley was spreading God’s love even in the face of her own demise. Today her family rejoices that she has been reunited with her mother and other family members in the presence of her Lord and Savior. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Grady and Eva Fletcher, sisters Vivian Range, Thelma Kimmerly, and Ruby Thacker, and brother Glen Fletcher.
