Obituary of Dixie Lee (Houchins) McRoy
Dixie Lee (Houchins) McRoy, age 86, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021. Dixie was born on November 14, 1934 to the parents of Hugh and Virgil Daniels. Dixie grew-up in Montezuma, IN until her late teen years, at which time she moved to Indianapolis, IN. Her dad worked for the Railroad and in his later years was a Meat Inspector. Her mother had various odd jobs before opening a restaurant in Montezuma. Dixie’s first job was working in the restaurant. She finished high school in Indianapolis (Washington and Howe) and worked at Huddleston’s Restaurant down the street from her home. Later she worked at Block’s Department store in downtown Indianapolis. In her early 20’s and 30’s she devoted her time to taking care of her family (Ronnie, Peggy and Kent). In addition, she was very active in church. In 1968 she began working at Community Hospital (eastside of Indianapolis) as a Nurses Aid. In 1969 she graduated from Indianapolis Public School of Practical Nursing (Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)) and continued to work at Community for a few more years. From 1970 through 1975 she worked as an LPN at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center. During that time she attended IUPUI (Indianapolis) to complete her Nursing Home Administration training. In 1975 she was hired by Greenview Manor Nursing Home, Indianapolis, as an LPN and worked there until 1983. At one point in her career there she was Acting Administrator. In 1984 through 1995 she worked for Visiting Nurse Services, Indianapolis. Most of her time there was taking care of a quadriplegic girl. She attended high school and college with her. During Dixie’s time there she was voted Nurse of the Year. In 1995 she went to work at Anthem as a Medical Advisor. Part of her duties were to review disputed medical claims for payment or denial. In 2000 she retired, but stayed busy. She was able to spend more time with her grandchildren, and great grandchildren and dedicate more time to the church. She also helped start the We Care Association that continues to serve nearly 400 homes on the near Westside of Indianapolis. In addition to all of the above she liked gardening, quilting and tracing the genealogy of her family. She is survived by her son, daughter, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
