William Arthur Smith

William Arthur Smith, 91 of Clarksburg, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Heritage House Nursing Home. Bill was born on January 28, 1925 in California, PA, the son of Wesley and Edith (Marsland) Smith. Bill grew up in Pennsylvania and joined the U.S. Army during WWII. On March 1, 1979 he married Anne Cooper in Las Vegas, NV and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter Judy (Steve) Pollard of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, one brother Lawrence (Edna) Smith of Camby, IN, one son-in-law Bob Patee, six granddaughters, eight great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter Ruth Patee, one son Steven D. Smith, two sisters Audrey Veit and Dorothy “June” Chitester and one brother Edwin Smith.
Bill worked in construction most of his life, building homes. He was a member of the Pike Twp. Lions Club, American Legion, VFW, Disabled Army Veterans, Traders Point Christian Church, Clarksburg Christian Church and Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau. For 25 years, Bill was on the Pike Twp. Volunteer Fire Department before joining the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department. He was a volunteer fireman for 56 years between the two departments receiving various awards and serving as Captain and Chief for many years during his time.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 from 4PM-8PM at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1 at 10:30AM also at the funeral home with Rev. Jerran Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at the Clarksburg Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pike Twp. Lions Club, Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department or Clarksburg Christian Church.
