Stephen Charles Matula

Stephen C. Matula, of Virginia passed away on September 20, 2017 at the age of 97.
He was born in Middletown, PA on November 4, 1919 of Slovak descent. He attended The Pennsylvania State University and graduated from George Washington University. He joined the Army Air Force and served during WWII and the Korean War. Mr. Matula retired as an Air Force Colonel. He continued his career and retired as a senior official with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He was active in Slovak organizations, particularly JEDNOTA (the first Catholic Slovak Union), Washington D.C. Branch, where he served as President for more than 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen E. Matula and Mary Kopkas Matula; and siblings, Robert Matula, Agnas Matula, Anne Matula, and Joe Matula.
He is survived by his loving partner Marie E. Parker; his family, Joan M. Toohey, Joseph A. Mihalcik, Kathryn M. Moore, Terri M. Hoover and their families; friends, Stuart Jamison, Carlos Videla, Bob Heina and other ushers from Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington D.C.
Visitation will be held from 4-7PM Tuesday September 26, 2017 at Murphy Funeral Home in Falls Church.
A Memorial Mass will be conducted on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 10:30AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington D.C. with a gathering for friends and family following.
Military Rites will be conducted at the graveside services on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 1:00PM in Middletown, PA at Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
