Horace Reid Lewis, age 93, of Pasadena, Maryland, passed away on May 7, 2024.
Horace was born in Kelford, North Carolina to Benjamin Franklin Lewis and Sybil Kathleen Lewis on February 8, 1931. After graduating from high school, he attended Norfolk Business University in Virginia. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1950 and was stationed in Norfolk on the U.S.S. Salem, part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, until his honorable discharge in 1954. He moved to the Washington, DC area in 1958 where he met his future wife, Betty, whom he married in 1970. They settled down in Falls Church, Virginia to raise their family and continued to live there for 50 years until moving to Maryland in 2020 to be closer to their daughters.
After moving to the Washington area, Horace first worked as a grocery store manager, then later became a business owner when he operated an Arnold Bread franchise. Starting in his early 60’s he began a new career as a residential realtor in Northern Virginia. Liking to stay busy, he continued in this profession until deciding to retire at age 85.
After retirement, Horace stayed active with various hobbies, including woodworking and gardening. He especially loved to make birdhouses and benches. He took a lot of pride in maintaining a beautifully landscaped yard.
Horace is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Lewis, his daughter Angela Kramer and son-in-law Alan Kramer, his daughter Amy Blanch and son-in law Dave Blanch, his step-daughter Suzie Riofrio and son-in-law Marcelo Riofrio, and 5 grandchildren: Jessica, Emily, Hannah, Jake and Calista. He is also survived by his sisters: Joan Lay, Claire Strickland, and Sybil Kupec.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at National Funeral Home and Memorial Park, in Falls Church, Virginia. Burial will follow at National Memorial Park at 2:00pm.
