Obituary of Albert Gonzales
Albert was born to Raphaela F. and Manuel E. Gonzales, Sr. in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania in the spring of 1925. He grew up there along with his 2 sisters, Katherine and Lena and 5 brothers, Joseph, Ralph, Manuel, Theodore and Emil. He served in WWII as a Private First class. He joined the Army Reserve in 1949 retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1972. As a young man, he eventually relocated to Washington D.C getting a job as a clerk in the federal government and was later promoted to the position of the Director of Automation for the Army. He received the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service and Meritorious Civilian Service Medal from the Department of Army and retired in 1980. Albert met his wife Florence, they married in August 1955 until her death in 2013. They had two children, Nancy Gonzales, who passed away in 2013, and Cindy Gonzales. Al was active in community groups, volunteered in the Lions Club, coached his daughter’s softball team and was active in the First Baptist Church of Annandale in youth and leadership positions. Albert cared about people, his neighbors, his employees and the men under his command in the Reserves. Albert is survived by his daughter, Cindy, his brothers Ralph and Theodore Gonzales and his sister Lena Gomez. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity and sense of humor. Funeral services are Saturday, July 7, 11 a.m. at the United Baptist Church, 7100 Columbia Pike, Annandale and the burial to follow at the National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church.
