Obituary of Cecelia Bergin Robbins
Cecelia Jeannette Bergin Robbins, Cece, Mom, MitMar died February 3, 2024 at her home in Fairfax, Virginia. Cece was born August 7, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the oldest child of RADM Charles and Katherine Bergin. Cece had two sisters. Kathy Zaepfel (Bob) and Patty Bergman (Don). Cece was born into a Navy family and spent her life traveling, as the Navy promises you will see the world. She lived in Virginia, Washington, California, Hawaii, and Illinois to name a few. When not on the road the family could be found in Rye, New Hampshire at the family farm. This was the place to go to rejuvenate. Cece loved the farm and her time spent with family and friends in Rye. After a childhood as a Navy Junior, Cece was deposited at Mary Washington College (MWC) of the University of Virginia. While at MWC Cece studied Sociology. Her real passion at college were her friends and bridge. Her college friends and bridge carried her a lifetime. It was while a student at MWC that Cece met her husband, Berton A Robbins, III. Bert was attending the US Naval Academy. In 1959 Cece and Bert were married. In the early years of their marriage Cece and Bert moved and had children. Patty (Scott), Bert IV (Kathie), Denise (Bob), Peggy (Keith) and Sarah (Mike). It couldn’t have been easy, the odds were against her, 5 to 1, but she was a GREAT Mom. She loved her children and we knew it. Scouting, sports, school plays and concerts, she was there. She even helped us deliver newspapers on snowy mornings. In 1988 with the birth of her first grandchild she became Mitmar. Mitmar had 12 grandchildren. Sean (Caroline), Chris, Thomas, Alex, Charlotte, Rebecca, Emily, Marina, Anthony, Zach, Nick, and Hannah. The grandchildren had Big Fun with MitMar. In addition to her grandchildren Cece had many nieces and nephews whom she held dear. Outside of her family life, Cece had a career as a Secretary with the Army Corps of Engineers in the Institute for Water Resources. She was also a volunteer for several organizations and programs in her community to include the Catholic Community at Fort Belvoir, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, and Good Shepherd Housing. Cece was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Fort Belvoir Garden Club. A Funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria at 10:30 on Thursday, March 14th. Following Mass, the family is hosting a gathering at the Mount Vernon Inn from 1:00 - 3:00 to commemorate and celebrate Cece’s life. Cece will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In her honor, call an old friend for a long chat, maybe take your dog out for a cheeseburger.
