Barbara Duffner Chapla

Barbara D. Chapla passed away at the age of 84 on Monday, November 18, 2024 in Alexandria, Virginia. Barbara was born in Yonkers, New York on March 28, 1940 to Rupert and Winifred Duffner. She married Daniel B. Chapla on July 2, 1960 in her hometown of Croton-On-Hudson, New York. In 1978 Barbara and Dan made their last move as a military family and settled in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria, Virginia. Barbara spent 25 years working as a meeting and conference planner with United Way of America in Alexandria, Virginia. Barbara was a parishioner at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mount Vernon where she and Dan were active in Cursillo. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family at the pool in the summers at the Mansion House Swim Club and taking trips to the beaches in New Jersey and North Carolina. Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, LtCol Daniel B. Chapla, USMC. She is survived by her sister Joan Schaad (Richard) of Hendersonville, North Carolina and brother Robert Duffner (Carol) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; children Peter Chapla (Marsha) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, David Chapla (Leslie) of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania and Mary Chapla Mikulski (Tim) of Alexandria, Virginia; and grandchildren, Alisa, Kevin, Olivia, Matthew, Harrison, Winnie, Avalon, Lally and great grandsons Henry, Decker, William and James.
Services to honor and celebrate Barbara’s life will be held with a visitation at Demaine Funeral Home Fairfax - 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia 22030 from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2024. There will be a webcast available for the service which will be available on the Demaine website on the morning of the service, November 23, 2024. At a date yet to be determined, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, Virginia 22309 followed by burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
