Matthew James Shields

Matthew James Shields, 47, of Evansville, IN passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021 at home after being vaccinated and weeks of battling complications from covid. He was born on September 20, 1973 to James W. Shields (deceased) and Lee Ann Shields. He was their only child who they loved dearly. He shared a home with his mom and took loving care of her. He graduated from Harrison high School in 1992 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Indiana in 1997, with a double major in Sociology/Criminal Justice, and Political Science. Matt worked for 28 years in the Vanderburgh Corrections Program. Most recently he was employed at the Vanderburgh County Therapeutic Work Release Program. He enjoyed talking to and laughing with his fellow co-workers. Matt was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Evansville Masonic Lodge #64, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Hadi Shrine. Matt was close to his aunt Debbie Sturgeon and uncle Mike Sturgeon (deceased), and his cousins, Mindy Gaffney (Dan), Andrea Sturgeon, Amy Seib (Tim). He also had a close relationship with his aunts Donna Lenburg and Carol Fischer. He loved his unofficial sister, Mrs. Beth Johns who he lovingly referred to as the “Bethanator.” A special thanks to Mrs. Kelly Kircher who has been a major support during the days following his death.
