Obituary of Richard "Lanny" Lansey Horton
Reverend Richard Lansey (Lanny) Horton of Culpeper, died January 12, 2019 from a brave fight with cancer. Lanny was born March 12, 1943, in Clifton Forge, VA to Ethel Louise Shiflett Horton and James William Horton. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Sheila Adams Horton, of Culpeper, son David Christopher Horton (Diana); daughters, Gina Hughes (George), and Wendy L. Horton, all of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by a brother, James William Horton, Jr. (Dianne), of Charlotte, NC; father-in-law, Reverend R. LeRoy Adams, of Orange, VA; brother-in-law, Michael LeRoy Adams (Teresa) of Petersburg, VA; five grandchildren – Shawn Stephen Norred (Vera), Chad Richard Norred, Landon James Lee Blankemeyer, Gregory Hughes and Gwendolyn Hughes, one aunt, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Lanny graduated from Clifton Forge High School, did his undergraduate work at The University of Richmond, and earned his Master of Divinity degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. As a caring servant of the Lord, in his long pastorate, Lanny served as pastor of Sparta Baptist, Sparta, KY, Stukeley Hall Baptist, Richmond, VA; Cosby Memorial Baptist, Richmond, VA; Kerrs Creek Baptist, Lexington, VA; Providence Baptist, Red House, VA; and associate pastor, Broaddus Memorial Baptist, Richmond, VA. His longest tenure was Director of Missions for the Shiloh Baptist Association. After retirement, he filled interim pastorates at Lael Baptist in Lignum, VA and Remington Baptist in Remington, VA. Lanny was a great advocate for spreading the Word through international missions. He served in and led teams in missionary work in Europe, South America, and Central America. While working in these areas he developed meaningful relationships with many individuals. From his work in Mexico, he helped establish the first Hispanic church in Culpeper - Primera Iglesia Bautista Maranatha. He was also a great believer of state and local missions, shown by his promoting Impact VA - a one-week work camp for youth from across Virginia to help those less fortunate in the area to have homes that are warm, safe and dry. On the local community level, he had a heart for helping others and making a difference in the lives of people. He was President of Culpeper Habitat for Humanity, served on the local Cable Commission, the Public Transportation Board, and was active in Aging Together, Living the Dream, and the community Winter Warming Shelter. Lastly, he served as a chaplain on call for Culpeper Hospital. Lanny genuinely cared about people. He was always willing to listen, to counsel, and assist in any way he could. There was no pretention about him. He was who he was! Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at Culpeper Baptist Church. A visitation and fellowship time will follow immediately in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be on a later date.
