Obituary of Donald J Brunner
In Loving Memory of Colonel Donald James Brunner February 28, 1945 - October 8, 2023 With profound sadness, we announce the loss of a decorated military veteran and beloved educator. Colonel Donald James Brunner, passed away at the age of 78 in his hometown of Culpeper on October 8th 2023. His legacy of duty, bravery, commitment, love and wisdom is surely etched in the hearts of those who knew him. Colonel Brunner's life was a testament to unwavering dedication and remarkable service to God, his wife Darlene, his family, his country and his community. Colonel Brunner was born to Gloria and Joe Brunner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the 4th of 14 children. He graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and went on to earn his Master's degree in History while teaching ROTC at Eastern Kentucky University. He was also a studied military academic attending the National War College on his journey to command the 377th Armor Battalion (Tigers Sir!), the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion in Baltimore and finally NATO command, among many others. Colonel Brunner's military career was nothing short of extraordinary. He served as a decorated military veteran of the Vietnam War, where he displayed tremendous valor and leadership. His service earned him numerous accolades and honors. He was a hard charging, Ranger in the 101st Airborne Division. He earned the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with three service stars), Armed Forces Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge. Colonel Brunner's exceptional dedication to his nation did not go unnoticed. President Clinton, recognizing his outstanding leadership and skills, ordered his recall to active duty to serve as a NATO commander tasked with helping in the rebuilding of Bosnia. His contribution to the cause of peace and stability was commendable and invaluable. After an illustrious 31-year military career, Colonel Brunner embarked on a second career as an educator at Culpeper Middle School, where he shared his passion for history for 25 years. He worked throughout his community teaching at Germana community college and running a history program at Coffeewood Correctional Center. His commitment to educating the next generation left an indelible mark on countless students, instilling in them the values of knowledge, discipline, and service. Throughout his lifetime, Colonel Brunner was active in his Catholic faith in many ministries — a trait he would credit to his parents. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Eucharistic minister, a leader in many charismatic prayer groups, and an active singer in the choir (usually led by Darlene). Beyond all these accomplishments he also held the title of “the unbeatable grandmaster Opa” in cribbage with his sons and grandchildren — at least whenever he played with the red pegs. Colonel Brunner is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Darlene, who stood by his side through all his endeavors. He is also survived by his two sons, Kevin and Jeffrey, six adoring grandchildren (Cullen, Kynon, Cody, Chloe, Kelson, and Lochlan), and one cherished great-grand-daughter (Aspyn-Rose). His family was a source of inspiration and strength throughout his life, and they will forever carry forward his legacy of honor, courage, and commitment. Colonel Donald James Brunner's life was a shining example of selfless service, dedication, and love for his family and his country. He will be remembered as a hero, mentor, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His presence in our lives will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts and minds of all those he touched.
