Charles Johnson, 94, of Franklin County, died Wednesday, November 1, 2012, at Brookville Health Care Center near Brookville.
Charles was born in Estill County, Kentucky, August 14, 1918, one of ten children of Joel and Cassie He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II where he attained the rank of Seaman First Class while serving in the Pacific Theater. . In May of 1940, he was married to the former Geneva Hackworth who died in April of 1959. On August 1, 1962, he married the former Martha Barbour in Laurel who died March 17, 2012. Charles retired from Roots-Blower in 1980 where he was employed as a machinist. He also farmed all of his life in Franklin County. Charles enjoyed reading and was an avid fisherman. He was a former member of the Eagles and Moose lodges in Connersville.
Charles is survived by five children and their spouses: Barbara Rogers and Jon Wayne of Laurel, Ernest Johnson of Apopka, Florida; Joyce Lockwood of Brookville; Charles Johnson, Jr. and Leta of Laurel, Michael and Karen Johnson of Brookville; three step-sons and their wives: Richard Barrett and Dana of New Castle; Bill Barrett and Myra of Connersville; Monte Barrett of Richmond; his sister: Viola Hackworth of Laurel; twelve grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his two wives, he was preceded in death by a step-son: James T. “Sonny” Barrett; four sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Pastor Chuck McMahan of Smyrna Baptist Church, New Trenton, officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel North Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday where memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society.
