Obituary of Harold Jones
Harold Brown Jones, age 89, died peacefully at his home Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 P.M. with his family at his side. Born July 30, 1920 in Washington Township (Monroe County) to Lawrence and Dova (Brown) Jones. Harold married Julia Geraldine Watts on November 11, 1944 in Bloomington. He is survived by his wife, Julia “Jerry” Jones, of Bloomington; three daughters, Carolyn Sue VanHorn, Joyce Ann Floyd (John M.) and Barbara Jean Shields (Ike), one son James Harold Jones (Kathy); eleven grandchildren, Beth Ann Nixon, Jeffrey Todd VanHorn, Alicia Dawn Williams, John Scott Floyd, Matthew Heath Floyd, Britney Noel Bell, Nickolas Nathaniel Bell, Jacob Allen Jones, Tiffany Shields, Klay Gillham and Kris Gillham, fourteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. A devoted Christian, Harold was a member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church. He previously was a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendant at Simpson Chapel and New Prospect Church. He also attended Calvary Church and Harvest Baptist Church. He drove a school bus for more than 50 years, 9 years in Washington Township, 32 years for M.C.C.S.C. and 10 years for Richland-Bean Blossom Schools. He retired from the U. S. Post Office after 23 ½ years of service. Additionally he worked at R.C.A., farmed and worked at the Farm Bureau Co-op. He was drafted by the U.S. Army during W.W. II on November 11, 1942 and was honorably discharged in January 1944. Harold was active in Monroe County Farm Bureau and served as President for two years. He also co-founded C.O.P.A. to fight a toxic landfill being planned to be built on Bottom Road in the early 1990’s. Never knowing a stranger, Harold always had had a smile on his face and a pocket full of candy. He loved to eat at Golden Corral and rarely had a hot meal because of being too busy talking to friends. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Thursday at Day Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday at the funeral home with Bro. Jim Barr and Pastors Jon Miller and Roy McRoberts officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens where the Veterans Honor Guard will perform military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be given to Mt. Pleasant Christian Church.
