Obituary of Harry Randolph Gordon
In Honor of Harry Randolph Gordon Harry Randolph Gordon, 95, of North Bethesda, Md., entered into eternal life with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 15, 2016. He was reunited with his beloved wife, Edna Mae Palmer Gordon, just before their 64th wedding anniversary on October 18th. Harry was born in Washington, D.C. on September 29th, 1921. He grew up in the Chevy Chase, Md. area with his parents, Harry Dell Gordon and Dorothy Fuller Nevius Gordon. He was the only child born on both sides of the family, descending from generations of Washingtonians. His maternal grandfather, Burnet L. Nevius, was the first telephone operator in Washington, D.C. Harry’s paternal grandfather, Adelbert Gordon, Jr., worked in real estate and owned several properties along Pennsylvania Ave. Harry’s father, Harry Dell Gordon, continued the real estate business. He rented the first root beer stand to J. Willard Marriott, and made the fateful decision to refuse Mr. Marriott’s offer of a business partnership with him. Harry R. Gordon received masters degrees in business from the University of Maryland and American University, owning the business Plant & Gordon as a Realtor for the Maryland and Washington, D.C. areas. Harry R. Gordon volunteered to fight for his country in February 1942 in World War II, and served in active duty from April 1943 to January 1946. He participated in the Allied Invasion of Normandy on DDay, landing on Omaha beach. He continued to serve with the U.S. Army 55th Quartermaster Infantry. Harry’s passing leaves his longtime friend, Mr. Chester “Chet” Palinski of Rochester, NY, as the last living veteran of the 55th Quartermaster. Harry received the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon during his military service. He was a member of The American Legion. Harry Randolph Gordon is survived by three daughters and seven grandchildren. He was laid to rest at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, VA on October 28th, with his family respecting his request for only a graveside service. Military honors were given as “Taps” was played while soldiers stood at attention. The American flag draped over the casket was then folded and presented to the family. In lieu of flowers, Harry requested that donations be sent to the nonprofit international ministry TruthAction P.O. Box 5455 Asheville, NC 28813.
