Doris Nash Morris, age 97, formerly of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on August 7, 2024, at the
Commonwealth Senior Living Center in Fairlawn, Virginia. She was born on June 27, 1927, in Stanleytown, Virginia to the late Frederick Lawson Nash and Lelia Zora Jamison Nash. Doris was a devoted wife of over 75 years to her late husband Aubrey, and a devoted mother to her children - Gary, Mark, and Roger. Doris also "adopted" her daughters-in-law as her own and loved them very much. They are Maxine, Sue and Patricia. Her greatest pleasure and source of pride was being Grandma to her grandchildren, which are Tyler (Sara), Drew, Alex, Brad, Emily, and Sarah. Later two great-grandchildren came along, which were as much a source of joy as any other family member. They are Tyler and Sara's daughter Callie, and Emily's son, CJ. She dearly loved her siblings and their wives. Doris was a cherished older sister to the late Ralph Nash and the late Wayne Nash. Their families were never far from her mind and Doris adored her sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews from both her and Aubrey's siblings.
Doris graduated from Bassett High School in 1946 where she was a cheerleader and in the band. She also was on the yearbook staff as the business manager, a singer in the glee club, and in the literary society. After graduation, Doris attended Ferrum College where she was the secretary-treasurer of the Delta-Omega social club and in the choir. Later, Doris worked at Dupont, Lesco Homes, and Stanley Furniture, all in the Henry County area.
Doris is described by many as one of the nicest and loving people they ever met. After she and Aubrey retired, Doris pursued a variety of interests including art and singing. Along with her husband Aubrey, she continued to sing with a variety of groups and in the church. Above all, Doris was a Christian and very spiritual, inheriting her faith from her parents. She was a faithful attendee of Stanleytown United Methodist Church for many years, and was the last member of a founding family of the Church when chartered in 1934..
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on August 17th at Stanleytown United Methodist Church with interment at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Doris loved flowers and they are welcome in addition to donations going to the Church.
