Donald Edward Hanky, Sr.

Passed away on March 8, 2021
Obituary of Donald Edward Hanky, Sr.
Our father, Donald Edward Hanky, 93, passed into Jesus’ Arms on March 8, 2021. He was a good father, a faithful son, and only child of Edward and Mary Melton Hanky. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia and attended Benedictine High School. While in pharmacy school at the Medical College of VA, he left to serve in the Army during WWII. Upon return to school, he met and married Margaret Ann Pollard, of Danville, VA. They met at a school picnic when a snake suddenly appeared in the grass, and our mom jumped into our Dad's arms to get away. They were the proud parents to the three of us. He is survived by Donald Edward, Jr, the oldest and his wife Sandi, Douglas Hanky a well-respected Richmond area Paramedic, and Annemarie Egli and her husband Coast Guard Veteran Dane. He was a proud grandfather to Justin, Melissa, Bettina, Caleb, Corrie, Constance and Colson and great grandfather to 8 children. He worked for several Richmond area pharmacies until he and our mom finally opened their own, in Theresa Thomas Medical Center in Ashland. They greatly enjoyed running that together until our mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Dad selflessly cared for her for 15 years until she passed in April of 2005. He was an active member at St. Ann’s Parish in Ashland, VA. where he met and married Joan, who loved to dance and filled Dad’s life with laughter. Sadly, Dad lost Joan to cancer after several years together. Our Dad was a kind man that helped his church, cared about people, was a dedicated professional and a lifelong Redskin fan, no matter how bad their season went! Dad was a craftsman and could make or fix anything, a skill he passed down to his sons. He was an accomplished decoy carver. His many carvings are a testament to his terrific woodworking and artistic skills. We will miss him greatly." But we don't grieve as those who have no hope.... " 1 Thes. 4:13. We won't say "goodbye," but just "see you in a little while!" Love you, Dad. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the HavreDeGrace Decoy Museum.
