George K. Alexakis

George K. Alexakis passed away peacefully amongst family the morning of July 16th, 2016. Born in Tarapsa, Greece on September 14th, 1920, he made his first trip to America in 1954 and brought his family to Arlington, VA in 1967. He was a restauranteur for 47 years; his first business being Edgewood Restaurant, opened in Clarendon, VA in 1969. George stayed close to his Greek roots by serving on the Parish Council of St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, VA, and by being a lifelong member of the local AHEPA Peter Derzis Chapter #438. He was also an active member of the Laconian Society of Washington, DC, and the first president and founding member of the Vasilakion Society. Though accomplished, George was most known for his kindness and generosity, which was exemplified by the way he smiled to the way he helped others, including his fellow Greek American immigrants. And though America gave him the opportunities to raise a family and become a successful entrepreneur, Greece was always home. He frequently visited his hometown of Tarapsa with his family, together cherishing their roots and ancestry. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Frosso, and their four children and their families; his sons Kostas, Tony and Dimitri; his daughter Joanna; his daughters-in-law Laura, Kelly and Helen; and grandchildren Stephanie, George, Leonidas, Eleni, Aristotelis, and Kostas. The visitation will be held at Murphy’s Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington VA, 22203, on Thursday, July 21st from 6-8pm, with the Trisagion service at 7pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, VA on Friday, July 22nd at 11am, followed by graveside service and interment at Oakwood Cemetery, 401 N. Roosevelt Street, Falls Church, VA 22046.
