Obituary of Dr. Allan J. Goody
Allan J. Goody, MD was born December 16, 1970 in Leigh, England to John and Diane Goody. He is survived by his parents, his wife Diana, daughter Claire, his sister Samantha and her husband Johnathan, his brother James and his wife Amy. He is uncle to Elliot, Lily, and Wilson Bailes. Allan grew up in Croft, England until the age of 5 when he moved with his parents to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. From ages 5-8, Allan lived in Saudi Arabia and traveled extensively, including a trip to Africa. At age 8, Allan moved back to England, living in Great Brickhill, a village in Buckinghamshire. There, he attended Bedford Modern School, where he excelled as a student and cricketer. At age 12, Allan had his first kidney transplant at Guy’s Hospital in London. A year later, his family moved to Houston, TX, where they lived for 3 years. The family later relocated to Birmingham, AL where Allan graduated as Salutatorian at Vestavia Hills High School. Allan joined the Georgetown University family in 1988 and never left. He achieved undergraduate degrees in both chemistry and computer science, and won the award for Most Outstanding Computer Science Student in 1992. Drawing motivation from his own personal health, Allan always wanted to be a physician. During medical school, Allan received a kidney from his mother, Diane. Unfortunately, the kidney rejected and Allan completed medical school on peritoneal dialysis, receiving his MD from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1996. After taking a year off while on a kidney transplant list, Allan decided that he was not going to let his medical setbacks slow him down. Allan completed his 3 year residency at Georgetown University Hospital in 2000, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society in 1999 and received the William P. Argy Memorial House Staff Award for dedication to medical student teaching in 2000. Allan completed his fellowship at Georgetown in 2002 and was a 2-time winner of the Paul R. Wilner Award for the Most Outstanding Fellow in the Department of Medicine. Just 2 months after his fellowship, Allan received a kidney from his father, John, at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 2003, Allan became a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Nephrology & Hypertension at Georgetown University School of Medicine. During this same year, he started his own private practice, Arlington Nephrology LLC. Allan loved teaching. He often said that he was happiest when he was doing morning rounds with residents or talking to them in the classroom. Allan received the Clinical Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Georgetown University Internal Medicine Department in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2007, he was a nominee for the Golden Apple Award and was the STAIR Grant Award winner for resident instruction of medical students in physical diagnosis. In 2008 and 2010, Allan received the Sol Katz Award for recognition of previous teaching awards from the Georgetown University Internal Medicine Housestaff. Allan published six papers and was an invited speaker at numerous lecture series at Georgetown University Hospital, Virginia Hospital Center, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additionally, he volunteered on the first Tuesday evening of each month at the Arlington Free Clinic, where he provided dedicated patient care to those in need. Because of his compassion, loyalty, and unrelenting dedication to medicine and helping others, Allan has touched us all. He had an unbelievable amount of courage and will to succeed, despite odds that would have daunted most people. The Goody family would like to thank our friends, family, and the Intensive Care Unit at Virginia Hospital Center for the outpouring of love, care, and support. The hope is to endow an award in Allan’s name each year at Georgetown Medical School. Allan’s life and legacy will remain fingerprinted on our hearts forever.
