NANCY S. RACHELS (Age 79)
Of Alexandria, VA passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday February 4, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Col. Ray Howard Rachels; beloved mother of daughters Heather Rachels and Sheila Pearson (Jim), cherished Nana to grandchildren Emily and Rachel Pearson, and dear sister to Emory Smith (Elsie).
Mrs. Rachels, a longtime resident of the Mt. Vernon area of Fairfax County, was born Nancy Smith in Eastman, Georgia. She was an involved member in several Mt. Vernon civic organizations. In addition, she was active at the Hollin Hall Senior Center in the Mt. Vernon area.
Mrs. Rachels was a devoted family matriarch and loyal friend. Until her last day she lived an energetic and active life full of curiosity. She will be remembered as an avid reader, story teller and exceptional listener. The lives of family and friends were enriched by her wisdom, wit and devotion. She was a graduate of North Georgia College and State University and later earned a post-graduate degree from Georgetown University. She was a dedicated employee for the Central Intelligence Agency and trained countless employees in the subject of security protocol.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on February 11 at 11:00 am at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington St., Alexandria, VA.
Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a future date. Arrangements are being handled by Demaine Funeral Home of Alexandria, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her name to the Humane Society of Fairfax County at 4057 Chain Bridge Rd, Fairfax, VA 22030.
