Demaine Funeral Home
Carolyn Cooksey Baker passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was one month shy of reaching her 93rd birthday. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William H. Baker, her parents Norma Isabelle (Young) and Paul Jackson Cooksey, as well as her brothers Paul N. and Howard H. Cooksey.
Born in Manassas, Virginia, Carolyn grew up with two older brothers and her parents, until she moved to Williamsburg, VA to attend William and Mary College where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Education.
Carolyn was a devoted elementary school teacher with Fairfax County for over 30 years and continued to be a member of the National Education Association after her retirement. She was also a very active volunteer in her community, including with Faith Lutheran Church, where she was a long time member. Organizing volunteers at a local hospital and delivering for Meals on Wheels, were also indicative examples of Carolyn’s dedication to community service.
The ultimate hostess, Carolyn loved entertaining friends and family in her home for any occasion and decorating for each respective theme, whether for Redskins Football games or almost every festive holiday. She had a dedicated large closet filled with these decorations to add to the cheer and laughter that were always prevalent when Carolyn was in a room. She loved bright colors, fanciful attire, feather boas and red lipstick.
Anyone who knew Carolyn would agree that her smile was especially captivating and radiant, matching her always effervescent and sparkly demeanor. The ultimate testament to how important the many loving friendships Carolyn enjoyed and nurtured her entire life, was the extensive guest list and number of attendees at her 90th birthday party hosted by her family.
Carolyn was adored by all, and especially beloved by her 3 generations of nieces and nephews, most of whom lived locally. They celebrated her life in a private memorial service where their fondest stories and memories of their Auntie Carolina were shared.
