Daniel G. Stimson, 68, of Williamsburg, VA, former Director of Track and Field at the College of William and Mary, passed away October 17, 2017. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, coach and mentor and kept in close contact with many former athletes and coaches, enjoying every part of their lives. He was known for his infectious optimism in the face of adversity and always said "There's hope." Dan Stimson graduated from Falconer High School Class of '67, son of Gerald and Nancy Stimson. He graduated with honors from Ohio University in 1971 (All-Ohio, Central Collegiate and two-time MAC shot put champion), and held a master’s degree from Miami Ohio '74. Stimson coached track and field at the University of Tennessee in '71-72 and '82-86, Miami University (Ohio) '73-82, and the College of William and Mary from 1986 until his retirement when he continued as a volunteer coach. His honors included: Chautauqua County Sports Hall of Fame; the William & Mary Athletics Hall of Fame; Miami University Cradle of Coaches Hall of Fame; Honorary Alumnus of William & Mary 2011, and the Stimson Throwing Events Area. He and his wife were active members of St. Stephens Lutheran Church. Dan is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rosemary (Beal); a daughter, Krista Crider, her husband, Scott Crider; grandchildren, Samuel and Kara Crider; a son, Clare Daniel Stimson; sisters, Brenda Schmidt, Kathy DeFilippo (s. Dom DeFilippo); nephews, Amir and Hassan Estakhrian; and a great-niece, Azadeh Estakhrian. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church with reception to follow at St. Stephen Lutheran. The family visitation will take place 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, St. Stephen Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers please consider: the Daniel G. and Rosemary B.
