Nécrologie de Daniel Karl Malone
Colonel Daniel Karl Malone, USA (Ret.) passed away at the age of 90 in Williamsburg, Virginia on July 22, 2024. He loved God, his family and served his country with honor and distinction. Daniel was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 11, 1933. Danny, as he was known to the family as a youngster, lost his mother Pauline Stow Malone, when he was six months old. He and his older brother, Peter, were raised by his beloved Aunt Gertrude E. Malone, as well as his grandparents, Major General Paul Bernard Malone, Sr., USA (Ret.) and his wife Gertrude Kerwin Malone while Danny’s father, Colonel Paul B. Malone, Jr., USA (Ret.) continued his Army career. Danny revered his grandfather and they shared many adventures together. Danny’s formative years were spent in San Francisco, California and on The Presidio. Dan graduated from St. Ignatius High School Class of 1951 and excelled in his academics. He was a member of Junior US Army ROTC and earned the rank of Cadet Colonel and top rifleman on the Rifle Team. One of his biggest thrills was being a member of the Civil Air Patrol and learning to fly PT-13s. Dan earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy and graduated in June of 1955. During that time, he was forever grateful to his cousin, Colonel Paul B. Malone, III, USA (Ret.) who was a few years older than Dan and provided him with additional rations. Dan again excelled at learning languages and added Russian and German to his resume. Much to the dismay of his classmates, Dan also took up playing the bagpipes just for fun. Dan’s relationship with his brothers-in-arms would continue throughout his lifetime especially with his closest brothers, Williard “Bill” Robinson and William “Salty” Peters. To his brothers-in-arms, there will always be a special bond that knows no end. After graduating from USMA, Dan chose the Infantry branch and completed Basic Infantry Officer Course, Airborne School and Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Dan was then assigned to the second Armored Division, 43rd Armored Infantry Battalion outside of Manheim, Germany. Prior to leaving the states, Dan started dating Charlotte “Anne” Farquhar, the eldest daughter of Rear Admiral Allan S. Farquhar, USN (Ret.) and Charlotte Monnett Farquhar. Anne and Dan married in Butzbach, Germany in 1957 and enjoyed a storybook wedding as well as a few years of travel and adventure in Europe during their early years of marriage. Dan and Anne were married for 63 years. They had two daughters, Shannon Elizabeth born at Fort Benning, Georgia and Leslie Stow born at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. The family were united in Army life and moved multiple times according to Dan’s orders and assignments. Dan would eventually transfer to the Ordnance branch and earned his Master of Business Administration at Syracuse University. His first assignment without his young family was in Korea. Upon Dan’s return, the family was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and Fort Sill, Oklahoma as Dan continued to be promoted through the ranks and take on new challenges and responsibilities. Dan’s language skills served him well throughout his career. He spoke four languages fluently by the close of his career and continued to speak Russian, German and French even into his later years. In 1967, Dan was assigned to the Soviet Union as the Assistant Army Attaché. After a year of language school in Washington, D.C. for both Anne and Dan, the family moved to the Soviet Union and experienced two years of adventure and the challenges of living behind the Iron Curtain. Dan’s next assignment was in Cambodia during the Vietnam conflict. Dan had multiple assignments in Northern Virginia following his return from Southeast Asia, including to the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Joint Chiefs of Staff at The Pentagon. Dan was promoted to full Colonel during his assignment as the Commander of the Army Ammunition Plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Dan’s final assignment in his military career was at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. During that time, he and Anne came full circle, enjoying a few years traveling in Europe as empty nesters. Dan retired from the military in 1982 after faithfully serving his country with honor and distinction. Dan and Anne eventually settled in Williamsburg, VA and fully embraced their new community by generously sharing the knowledge and experiences they had gained from their travels and experiences around the world. They also thoroughly enjoyed visits from their grandchildren and many close friends. Dan never quite retired until his later years and enjoyed several years mentoring graduate students in the School of Business at William and Mary. He was very active in civic activities including Rotary International, the Capital Club of Williamsburg and The Williamsburg Map Circle. Dan embraced technology and was well known for giving PowerPoint presentations on a variety of topics. Dan was devoted to his beloved wife Anne who passed away in August of 2021. He is survived by his daughters, Shannon Malone Miller (Michael) and Leslie Malone Berger (Kevin); five grandchildren, Alexander Berger (Elena), Kiernan Berger (Madison) and Emilie Berger, 2nd Lieutenant Allan Miller, USAR and Henry Miller; and one great grandson Andrew Berger. He is also survived by his cousins, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Bernard Malone, IV, USA (Ret) (Diane) and their daughter Sandra Jagoda (Donny), Marylee Maloney (Jim) and Pat Malone (Marie); and sisters-in-law, Jean Farquhar Hubinger and Mimi Farquhar Graham; nieces, Barbara Jones, Carolyn Kumpe (Ken), Gretchen Hubinger (Dennis Strait) and Martha Blue (Jeff); nephews, Rob Graham (Leigh) and David Graham (Alison); as well as many great nieces and nephews. A Memorial service celebrating the life of Daniel Karl Malone will be held at Williamsburg Landing at a future date. He will later be interred in Arlington National Cemetery alongside his beloved wife, Anne. The family would like to thank the devoted and loving staff in Memory Support and Namaste at Williamsburg Landing as well as Gentiva Hospice care. Donations in Dan’s memory to Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association or Project Healing Waters a nonprofit organization helping wounded Veterans would be most appreciated. And when our work is done, our course on earth is run, may it be said, “Well done. Be thou at peace.” West Point Alma Mater
