Charles Robert Chope, known to friends and family as “Father Bob,” passed away on February 7, 2024.
He was born on May 29, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. Bob attended primary and high school in Michigan, and then went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in art education from Southern Connecticut State College. He furthered his education at Fairfield University, receiving a Master’s degree in administration and supervision. He studied at Rhode Island School of Design, and was gifted in sewing, design, and the arts.
Bob worked for many years in education, as an art teacher, vice principal and principal. Prior to his time as an educator, Bob worked for several years as a buyer for Hudson Department store. He also proudly served for four years in the US army. Bob loved to travel, and did so extensively in both the US and all over the world. He often talked about his travels to Italy, and his love for it was evident. He settled in Williamsburg, Virginia after years in Connecticut, and was very knowledgeable about the history of Colonial Williamsburg. Bob had an immense appreciation for the arts, and enjoyed antique furniture and artwork. He also loved cooking, and taught classes at Christopher Wren Association. Bob was a former priest, and took pride in the families he connected with through ministry.
In recent years, he was almost always listening to music, or watching opera on television with his dog Champ on his lap. He is survived by his sister, Barbara; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Anyone who spent time with Bob, knew he had an incredible spirit, and an infectious smile. He leaves behind a legacy of teaching, faith, art, culture and love. Bob touched the hearts of hundreds of people, and his laugh and stories will be greatly remembered.
