James Crawford Hayes, Jr., 83, of Stuarts Draft passed on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at his home. Born August 4, 1934 in Augusta County, he was the son of the late James Crawford Hayes and Mabel Elizabeth (Brown) Hayes Snyder. James was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, Class of 1951. In 1952, he signed an eight year contract with the U.S. Naval Reserve and while on active duty from 1953-1956 he attended boot camp in Bainbridge, MD, Electronics School in Great Lakes, IL and served aboard the USS Mississippi EAG-128 during the Korean Conflict. On July 13, 1957 he married Norma (Lowen) Hayes, and shared a blessed union of 61 years. Prior to retirement, James was employed by XEROX where he worked as an electronics technician. He was a member of West Waynesboro Church of Christ, the Loyal Order of the Moose, a Patriot Life Member of the National Rifle Association and the Circle Eight Square Dance Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Ellen (Hayes) Crummett. In addition to his wife, Norma Hayes, survivors include his children, Dennis James Hayes and wife, Pamela, Brenda Jean (Hayes) Tripp and husband, Nathan, and Elizabeth Jane (Hayes) Racheau and husband, Mark; four grandsons, Joshua Creasey and wife, Terrie, Timothy Hayes and wife, Caitlin, David Hayes and wife, Sydney and Michael Tripp and wife, Shalyn; three granddaughters, Sarah Jane Tripp, Amy Trevathan and husband, Luke and Rachel Tripp; eight great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Lyla and Chloe Hayes and Naomi, Kaytlin, Charles, William and Emma Tripp; sister, Dorothy Elizabeth (Hayes) Hall; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at West Waynesboro Church of Christ, 2212 Cortland St., Waynesboro, with his grandson, Rev. Timothy Hayes officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Those desiring may make memorial donations in James’s memory to West Waynesboro Church of Christ.
