Gene Tunney Thompson

Gene Tunney Thompson, 85, of Stuarts Draft passed away Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville. He was born July 14, 1928 at Ellard, now known as Cold Springs, a son of the late Robert C. and Ella W.( Painter) Thompson. Gene was a loving husband, father and a friend to many. He retired from E. I. DuPont with forty years of service and was a long time member of Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church. His love for God and family were a treasure to him. If the church door was open, Gene was there. The love of his life was the University of Virginia and its football teams. As an usher at the University of Virginia for nearly thirty years he made many friends with the players, students and their families. He is survived by his wife, Carole C. Vaught Thompson, four children; Gene Tunney Thompson, Jr., Yvonne Leone, Gail Bigner, Katie Moe and four children he loved as his own; Cindy Chirumbole, Karen Wilt, Mary Mallpezzi, Andrew Vaught, as well as a number of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a very special friend, Timmy Quick. A service of committal will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 23, 2013 at Augusta Memorial Park, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 3:30 PM at Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church by Pastor Isca Mitchell. Active pallbearers will be Bobby McLain, Tommy Roadcap, Donnie Harris, Chris Harris, Matt Welcher, Danny Myrtle, Danny Fitzgerald and Tommy Fitzgerald. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM today, Sunday December 22, 2013 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes. Family members and active pallbearers are asked to assemble at the funeral home on Monday by 1:30 PM.
