She was a Red Cross volunteer at the Oceana Dispensary, the Patch Barracks Dispensary, and Navy Relief. She was awarded for her service in 1989 as the Patch Barracks Volunteer of the Year. She coordinated food for several Habitat for Humanity building projects. She, more than once, was the soccer team “mom” cheerfully assuming all of those duties for all three of her children. After the Navy, Wendy was a valued and well-loved nurse, assisting Dr. Jonathon Miller, MD for over 20 years. She was known for her compassion and concern for their patients. She was active in church, serving on vestry several times and a willing participant on many outreach projects. Wendy loved tennis and her tennis girls. She was heartbroken when she was not physically able to play. Her courage throughout her long struggle was an inspiration to many.
