Pastor Walter “Bill” W. Clevenger, 75, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 7, 2015. He was born on November 7, 1939 to the late Walter Babb and Evelyn Madelyn Dixon Clevenger in Cumberland, Maryland. He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth Clevenger and his loving grandmother Grace Clevenger who raised him in Keyser, West Virginia. Bill was a natural athlete and earned a letter for every sport in high school. He was the quarterback of his high school football team the Golden Tornados of Keyser High School when they won the state championship in 1957. He served 30 years in the US Navy retiring as a DTCM. Jun 67-Jun 70; USS Guam (LPH-9) Jul 70-Apr 74; COMCRUDELANT Staff Norfolk VA Apr 74-Oct 74; COMNAVSURFLANT Staff Norfolk VA Oct 74-Aug 77; USS LY Spear (AS-36) Aug 77-Aug 79; Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA Aug 79-Oct 81; and 3rd FSSG Okinawa, Japan Oct 81-Jun 85; NAVMEC Jun 85-Jun 86; Naval Dental Clinic Norfolk VA Jun 86-Jun 88 retiring as Command Master Chief. Bill earned his BA from Golden Gate University; Master of Divinity from Regent University; and his PHD in Christian Ministry from Trinity University. He worked as a Contact Ranger at Seashore State Park for a season. After graduating from Regent University he pastored two small churches in Massillon, Ohio. He was saved at Open Door Chapel in 1978 and was invited back in 1996 to serve as Assistant Pastor and Principle of Open Door Christian Academy. He retired in 2009 after being the full time pastor since 2000. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Susan V. St. Pierre Clevenger; his children Sandra Sue Baboorian and her husband Razmik of Richmond, VA; Peggy Sue Harrington and her husband Roger of San Diego, CA; William K. Clevenger, USA retired and his wife Irish of Salem, OR; and Virginia Sue White and her husband Frank of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 9:00-10:00 A.M. at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home Chapel, 601 N. Withcduck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. officiated by Pastor George Beaven followed by Full Military Honors. Honorary Pallbearers are Razmik Baboorian, Frank White, Eric Baboorian, Brandon Clevenger, Larry Riggins, Henry Carter, Joe Calvert and Rus Rubeley. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers please treat a friend to lunch or by them flowers.
