Richard Freeman Byers, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully at the Villages of Avon. He was born on October 7, 1937, in Terre Haute to Charles Freeman Byers and Mary Alice (Stewart) Byers.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Shelly Pettyjohn and husband, Lance of Plainfield; son, Richard Byers and wife Melissa of Glen Carbon, IL; grandchildren, Megan Pettyjohn of Portsmouth, VA, Jacob Pettyjohn of Plainfield, Isabella Byers and Elijah Byers of Glen Carbon, and Danyale Short of Speedway; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Byers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon Byers; grandson, Seth Pettyjohn; and a brother, Jim Byers.
Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force. He worked for many years as a sheet metal worker for Local 20. He attended Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church when he was younger. Richard liked to collect guns and coins. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Visitation will be held from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home with Pastor Brett Byers officiating. Richard will be laid to rest next to his wife in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Society of America.
