Richard Scordo, 81, of West Springfield, VA, passed away at home on April 8, 2024.
Rich was born in West Haverstraw, New York to Jeanne and Salvatore Scordo on April 14, 1942. He went to school at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J. He was the team quarterback, and a talented baseball player who dreamed of playing for the Yankees.
Richard married Ines Costa on January 23, 1965 at St. Ann’s Church in Nyack, N.Y.. He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, after which he began his career at Lamont Geological Observatory, assisting in mapping sections of the ocean floor. With the crew he traveled around the world, including three oceans. He later worked at West Point where he eventually accepted a position as the Chief Director of Information Management in Mannheim, Germany. This began a 9 year adventure for his entire family.
Rich was a loyal Giants fan, and family cook who loved a cold beer and a good steak. Reading murder mysteries, playing hearts, doing crossword puzzles, collecting baseball caps from places he visited, and spending time with friends on the Outer Banks were among some of his favorite pastimes. He holds the world record for most consecutive days of making chicken cacciatore for his family. Rich was a family man who never missed a game, match, meet, or event where his children participated. You could always count on Pop-Pop showing up with Dunkin’ Donut holes for the grandkids, but what Rich loved more than anything else in his life was his wife Ines. She was his world and he was happiest when he was with her.
Rich was a member of tennis clubs in both New York and Germany, and loved his Saturday morning golf foursome. He and his wife Ines were early participants of the pickleball craze fifteen years ago on the Outer Banks, where they won a number of local competitions . In New York he was an active member of the local JCEES where he held the important honor of representing Santa for the town of Nyack, NY..
Richard is preceded in death by his parents and brother Sandy.
He is survived by: his wife Ines, children Richard, Teresa (Tari), Christopher and their spouses, his brother Tony, and 7 grandchildren.
