Richard “Dick” Wallace Bagby, 92, of Annandale, Virginia passed away at home on April 25, 2016.
Dick was born in Detroit, MI, on February 20, 1924, the son of Ryan and Marion Bagby. Following high school graduation, Dick took a job with Michigan Bell Telephone Company. Soon thereafter, in 1943, he joined the Navy, serving honorably as a fire control man on the USS Metcalf in the Pacific for two and a half years. After the war, he moved to the Washington, DC, area and again worked for “Ma Bell,” this time with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, from which he retired in 1980 after 39 years of service.
A member of the greatest generation, Dick built his own home in Annandale with the help of a good friend and enjoyed life to the fullest. A resident of the Pinecrest community since 1952, he enjoyed summer picnics, baseball games, swimming pool events, and playing tennis with the men every Saturday. In later years many hours were spent relaxing with his friends at Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, NC, on the Outer Banks.
Dick is survived by Mary Willard (Pickett) Bagby, his wife of nearly 50 years; daughter Linda Gail (Bagby) Koch, of Lexington, NC; son-in-law Steven Richard Jelinek, four grandchildren: Merrill (Jelinek) Ridgway, Adam Jelinek, Tatum Jelinek, Cody Jelinek, and two great grandchildren, Hadley and Hayden Ridgway, all of Fairfax, VA; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia (Walker) Bagby; his brother, Robert Bagby; and his daughter, Barbara Elaine (Bagby) Jelinek.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 7 at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield. Internment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Capital Hospice, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, Va. 22042.
