Leonard Francis Schafer Jr.

Leonard Francis Schafer, Jr. Leonard Francis Schafer, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 4, 2016. He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Roberta E. Schafer (nee Isabella), sons Robert L. Schafer (Susan E. Bowman), Gregory M. Schafer (Nova L. Wallace), Mark Schafer (Nancy L. Schafer), and grandchildren Victoria M. Basalyga (Michael J. Basalyga), Stephanie A. Schafer, Allison B. Schafer, and Cole W. Schafer. Leonard served in the Unites States Navy, where he sailed the Mediterranean Sea, and was awarded the National Defense and Navy Occupation Service medals. After the Navy, Leonard graduated with honors from the Drexel Institute of Technology with a degree in Commerce and Engineering, and began a long and distinguished career working as an engineer for Burroughs, General Electric Aerospace, TASC, and his own consulting company. After retiring, he spent his time traveling, attending theatre, listening to jazz music, drinking good beer, and enjoying quality time with his family and friends. Services will be held January 12 at 10am at St. Bernadette’s church in Springfield, VA, with internment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
