Grace Seung Lee, 80, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, at her home in Alexandria, VA.
She was born on October 24, 1943, in Sariwon, Hwanghae Province, Korea. Prior to immigrating to the United States, Grace graduated from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. In 1967, Grace then studied at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, before attending beauty school where she found her passion for styling hair. She married Doyung Lee on December 28, 1968, in Alexandria, VA, and also that year, they opened their first wig store, Crown Wigs, in L'Enfant Plaza, Washington, DC.
Grace opened a second location along King Street in Old Town Alexandria; meanwhile, moving the wig store in the District of Columbia a couple of times to Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan before settling in Silver Spring, MD. Grace then opened a third wig store, Hollywood Fashion Wigs, also in Old Town Alexandria during the early-80s, forming a wig conglomerate in the Washington Metropolitan Area. For over 50 years, Grace worked tirelessly styling and selling wigs and other hair products before succumbing to rheumatoid arthritis and dementia. One of her many accomplishments included styling several wigs for the First Ladies Exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.
Towards the latter part of her life, Grace loved discovering the world with her husband, family, and friends. Locally, Grace was a longtime member of The Church for All Nations in Vienna, VA. Grace's other interests included spending quality time with family & friends, taking cruises, water aerobics, soaking in spas, singing, having meals at buffets, and going on weekend retreats to Berkeley Springs, WV.
Grace is preceded in death by her father, Chan Suk Kim; mother, Bok Jin Chung; husband, Doyung Lee; and niece Sookja Park. Grace is survived by her three children: daughter Lily Lee and her husband Eric Fugier, grandsons Lucas Fugier and Tyler Fugier; son Alexander Lee; son James Lee and his wife Heather Lee, grandson Daniel Lee and granddaughters Katherine Lee & Elizabeth Lee; brother Pil Je Kim; sister Hyun Sook Kim; brother Myung Je Kim; nephew Kwang Kyu Lee; and nieces Myung Ja Yang & Pilja Park.
Pallbearers will be Alexander Lee, James Lee, Daniel Lee, Eric Fugier, Lucas Fugier, and Tyler Fugier.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151; and the interment will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 S. Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306.
