Horatio Edward Crute

Horatio Edward Crute, 93, a World War II Veteran, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014. He was born in Wylliesburg, VA on November 29, 1920 to Marshall E. and Ella N. Crute. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Doris B. Crute, his second wife of 29 years, Christine V. Crute, and his three sisters, Gladys “Polly” C. Hollins, Helen C. Staples, and Emma C. Crute. He is survived by his two daughters and their spouses, Jackie Kelley and her husband, Jeff, and Cathy Long and her husband, Chuck; his grandchildren, Jeff Kelley Jr. and his wife, Cristin, Derek Long and his wife, Sky, Darci Poole and her husband, William, Cooper Long, and Gabe Kelley; his great-grandchildren Riley and Nora; and many nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. After graduating from Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte Court House, he joined the U.S. Army as a Technician Fourth Grade. When he returned from WWII, he worked in the shipyard in Newport News before moving to Richmond in 1950 to work for Esso, retiring from Exxon Corp. in 1983 after 32 years of service. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Gold Band Sunday School Class. The family wishes to thank the Helping Angels at Dogwood Terrace and Encompass Hospice for all of their caring support. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., where services will be held 2pm Thursday, June 26, 2014.
