Ewell Daniel Hartman

Ewell D. Hartman joined his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 22, 2011. He is survived by his devoted companion of many years, Linda L. Brooks; his devoted friend and the mother of his children, Ann W. Hartman; his three daughters, Beth Lombardo Blankenship (Rick), Sandy K. Hartman, and Judy E. Hartman (Tony Vega); his grandson, Nick R. Lombardo; his granddaughter, Lindsey Lombardo Russell (Terry); and his great-granddaughter, Paisley Jayne Russell; his brother Dwight Hartman, sisters Geraldine Ebersole, Evelyn Wenger, Brownie Bumbaugh, and Rhea Hartman, many nieces and nephews as well as by many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Lena Hartman, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and by his brother, Raymond Hartman, also of Harrisonburg. Ewell was raised in a Mennonite family and attended First Mennonite Church of Richmond for many years, where he was involved in congregational music and played the organ. In the early 1980’s he became an active member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church, where he sang tenor in the choir for 15 years. Ewell obtained his Master Watchmaker certification from Bowman Technical School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1976 Ewell became the first manager of Schwarzschild Jewelers at Regency Square Mall from which he retired in 1997. Ewell served as President of the American Watchmakers Association for some years and also was a longtime member of the Horological Institute. He gave many lively speeches for both organizations. Ewell founded The Chronometer Club in the 1990’s and served as its Secretary from its inception. In 1998, Ewell was the editor of the first edition of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute Battery Number System. Ewell’s greatest loves, besides his family and friends, were attending church, meeting new people, watchmaking and the Associations, telling corny jokes, and traveling. He was sometimes known to brag about the impressive number of miles he could squeeze from a set of car tires, much to the amusement of his daughters. Ewell’s family would like to sincerely thank his many caring relatives and friends who visited, called and wrote to him during his final illness. The family also sends a heartfelt thank-you to the staff at Parham Doctors Hospital, Dr. Qureshi and his staff, Hospice of Central Virginia and Senior Solutions for their loving care of Ewell during his illness. Ewell lived an honorable and Christian life and helped others whenever he could. He never met a stranger. The family will receive friends at Woody’s Chapel on Parham Road on Sunday, November 27 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 28 at 11am at Grove Avenue Baptist Church, with interment to follow at Westhampton Cemetery on Patterson Avenue.
