Nécrologie de Aubrey C. Gouveia
Aubrey C. Gouveia, 89, died February 5, 2024, in Morrison Woods Health Club, Muncie, Indiana. He was born May 29, 1934, in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana), South America, to Amelia (Elliot) and Stanley P. Gouveia, and married Julia Kay Butz in Auburn, Indiana, February 15, 1957. Aubrey immigrated to America with his mother, a war bride, and two siblings, Joan Gouveia and Gordon Gouveia, in 1945, settling in Auburn, Indiana. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1953, attended Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University) where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, was produce manager for Marsh Supermarkets, and retired from New Venture Gear (General Motors, Chevrolet Transmission) after thirty- three years of service, during which he was Committeeman and Financial Secretary for UAW Local 499. In Auburn, Aubrey played for the Auburn Red Devils basketball team, which advanced to the Muncie Semi-State round of the Sweet Sixteen in 1953. Among his later accomplishments was winning the Delaware County Old Timers Holiday Tournament Free Throw competition for eleven years. (A fellow GM worker had opined that free throw shooters are born, not made. Aubrey practiced religiously and began winning free-throw contests, proving that free-throw shooters can be made. In truth, however, Aubrey had always had excellent hand-eye coordination!) He is survived by his wife, Julia Kay, to whom he was married for sixty-six years, his son, Andre (Chicago), his daughter, Shelly (Tom Shubert) (Calabasas, California), his grandchildren, Taylor Shubert (New York City), Dylan Shubert (California), Dr. Madison Shubert (Texas), McKenzie Shubert (Virginia), his brothers, Gordon Gouveia (Indiana), Andrew Myers (South Carolina), Robert Myers (California), Clifford Myers, (Florida). He was preceded in death by his parents, Amelia and Stanley Gouveia, stepfather, Robert Myers, and sister, Joan. Aubrey was a loving, giving, dedicated husband, father, and son, who will be long remembered and loved. Final Rites were administered by Father Christian DeCarlo, Muncie Catholic. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Muncie, 4800 West Bradford Drive, Muncie, Indiana 47304. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.elmridgefuneralhome.com.
