Major Walter Fleming (Ret.), 85, of Richmond, passed away August 10, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Louise D. Kay; daughters, Betty Kay Schall (Lawrence) of Bothell, Wash., Patricia D. Ferguson (Bill) of Richmond; grandchildren, Michael Kay Ross (Mary), Adam Kent Ross, R. Christopher Ferguson (Margaret), Jason S. Ferguson (Kate); great-grandchildren, Morgan Emma Ferguson, Catherine Kay Ross, Andrew E. Ross; a sister, Elizabeth Powell; and his beloved dog, Chobee; also numerous nieces and nephews. Walter served in the United States Navy Seabees during World War II. He was a member of Northside No. 292 Masonic Lodge AF&AM, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason, Past Potentate of ACCA Shrine Center in 1979. He received two degrees from VCU and graduated from the FBI Academy. He served on the National Committee of Aerospace Organizations in developing lightweight armor for law enforcement and military personnel. He retired as Deputy Chief of Police for the City of Richmond with a rank of major after 27 years of service. He became a resident of Beaufont Towers in May 2006, where he served as past president of the Residents Association. He was a member of Calvary Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 12, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel-Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, and where a funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will be held Monday, August 16, at 10 a.m. at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.
