A consummate artist and craftsman, James Gregory Montgomery, 59, died on August 14, 2014, following a brief illness. Born May 16, 1955, Greg was the son of the late Gene Emerson Montgomery and is survived by his mother, Sylvia Cantrell Montgomery of Richmond; his sister, Suzanne (Shoshanah) Montgomery of Laguna Niguel ,California; and his brother, Gene Emerson (Chip) Montgomery, Jr., also of Richmond. After graduating from James Madison High School in Vienna, Greg attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a BFA in Crafts in 1977. He leaves behind many dear and devoted friends who will remember Greg for his joy, kindness, and youthful personality. He also leaves behind a body of art and design that will forever be a testament of his creativity, skill, and unique flair. His most recent designs were displayed at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, the Virginia Aquarium Museum in Virginia Beach, and the Natural Bridge Museum in Rockbridge County.
A Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Bon Air Christian Church, 2071 Buford Road, Bon Air, VA. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Greg Montgomery Art Scholarship in c/o Alice M. McCabe and Suzanne Montgomery, 3915 Hickory Road, Richmond, VA 23235. Greg always ended his emails with a quote from Louis Nizer: "A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands, his brain and his heart is an artist " This was Greg.
